    Description

The Policeman's Handbook of Law Especially Designed for Police Officers
, written by Frank Mackett, Jr. of the Wisconsin Bar, is a 160 page, 4 1/4 X 5 3/4 inch softcover book published by the Sheriffs and Police Officers Association of America, Chicago. No copyright or printing date is noted, but the first page of the book is a full-page advertisement for joining the Sheriff and Police Officers' Association which ends with the following statement: "Special inducement to those joining now--no dues until 1929."
    Synopsis
    - From the preface: "This volume is designed for police officers desiring to acquaint themselves with criminal law and procedure so they may enhance their efficiency and usefulness to their communities." The guide includes instructions on courtroom demeanor, definitions of specific laws and terms, explanations of the actions of judges and juries, and information on prisoner treatment. Topics include: criminal intent; bail; pleading and proof; evidence; insanity plea; arrests; warrants; searches; entrapment; use of force, and more. A separate section (pages 117 to 156), written by William Simmonds, Auburn State Prison, is devoted to fingerprinting, with detailed information on the proper procedures for taking and interpreting fingerprints. This section is illustrated with black and white photos and drawings. The two center pages present the history, goals and accomplishments of the Sheriff and Officers' Association.
