The brass still has its orig, naturally aged brass patina & is hand painted w/linear details on one side. The figuration is especially exciting because the fluidity of the flying bird & its believable kineticism is in stark contrast to the rigidity of the brass sheet metal. There's a more genuine primitive & certainly not a naive quality about the figuration & handling of the bird, which is realized w/great sensitivity. But rather than a 19th c weathervane, this is a mid-20th c weathervane, adhering to many of the reductive, simplifying tenets of the prevailing Modernist aesthetic. The bird is flying horizontally w/both wings fully outstretched. The bulbous head & beak, effortlessly break through the air, all in silence. A rare Modernist form.

We're pleased to be able to offer this absolutely fresh-to-the -marketplace and recently discovered on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, beautiful vintage cut-out brass sheet flying bird soldered onto a copper pipe Modernist weathervane. The brass still has its original, naturally aged brass patina and is hand painted with linear details on one side. The figuration is especially exciting because the fluidity of the flying bird and its believable kineticism is in stark contrast to and contradicts the rigidity of the brass sheet metal. There's a more genuine primitive and certainly not a naive quality about the figuration and handling of the bird, which is realized with great sensitivity and a sense of visual poetry. But rather than a 19th century weathervane, this is a mid-20th century weathervane, adhering to many of the reductive, simplifying tenets of the prevailing Modernist aesthetic. The bird is flying horizontally with both wings fully outstretched. The bulbous head and beak, effortlessly break through the air, all in silence. A rare form from the Modernist period. Magnificent.
