T-70, .00 Confederate States Note – PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note issued by the Confederate State of America, catalogued by the late Grover Criswell as a T-70. By the time this note was authorized in early 1864, Confederate finances were showing the effects of a protracted war, with little hope of recovery. Inflation was rapidly escalating, and shortages of even the most basic items were becoming commonplace. Due to the increased inflation, notes of this denomination were becoming almost obsolete, though the Confederacy issued 932,800 pieces before the close of the war. The note is highlighted by a ¾ facing view of Judah Philip Benjamin, one of the most prominent men in the Confederate hierarchy, presented in an oval frame at the right. During the course of the war, Benjamin served as the Confederate Attorney General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State (before the war, Benjamin was a United States senator from Louisiana). The denomination appears in a medallion at the center of the note, with
“Richmond”
to the left and
“Feby. 17th 1864”
to the right. A printed financial obligation states that
“Two Years after the ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States & the United States of America THE
CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Will pay to the bearer on demand TWO DOLLARS”
. Two Treasury employees sign at the conclusion, one
“for Register”
and the other
“for Treasurer”
, with
“Engraved by Keatinge & Ball”
, between and slightly below. A second printer’s notation, indicating that the note was
“Lithogd. by Evans & Cogswell”
, can be seen at the left. The left end of the note is dominated by a vertical box, in black, with the denomination expressed as
“TWO”
within. A light, orange-pink security printing covers the majority of the note, with the vertical box at the end unaffected. The back, as with many notes of this era, was left blank. A great addition to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection. Nice eye appeal.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ”
, with no additional notations on the holder. The “
EPQ
” designation indicates that this note exhibits “
Exceptional Paper
Quality
” for the issue. The note is cut tight at the upper right edge, with the inner-frame line being affected (it is also tight along the right edge and bottom). The remainder of the margins are quite large for the issue, though all are irregular. The signatures are reasonably sharp and clear, the one at the left being particularly so. The contrast is average for the issue (though the security print is much closer to pink than red). Very light toning is present across the entire surface, though it is significantly more pronounced on the unaccomplished back. Several foxing spots, as well as some minor corrosion at the signatures can be seen when the note is viewed from the back. A very pleasing example of this well designed note.
